Branch activities

Walks, Talks and Moth-trapping

We run many different activities every year. These include guided walks to see rare butterflies, moth-trapping nights with experts on hand to help with identification and training workshops to help you learn how to identify all the species of butterflies or moths that can be seen in this area. We also have lectures on gardening for butterflies and on special moths and butterflies. For the current list of these activities click on Events on the menu on the left.

Work with Schools

We also go into schools to talk to children about butterflies and moths and help them plant gardens to attract these fascinating creatures. For more information on educational materials available click on Education

Protecting Biodiversity with local Councils

Some of our members sit on local County Council committees to advise on the rare species of butterflies and moths that should be protected in each area. Together with representatives from several other local wildlife groups, we help to write the LBAPs - Local Biodiversity Action Plans, which eventually will become documents that all developers will have to consult. For more information on the North Wales Lepidoptera LBAPs, SAPs, HAPs, etc. click on LBAPs

Reserve Management

Some of our volunteers carry out practical habitat management work on our own reserve at Eyarth Rocks near Ruthin -click on Reserves for more information. and also on some other reserves owned by County Councils and the North Wales Wildlife Trust.

Recording and Monitoring Butterfly and Moth Populations.

Butterflies have been declining at an alarming rate in the last 40 years. Now over half the remaining  North Wales butterflies are under threat. So one of our most important activities is in collecting records of the butterflies and moths that still live in North Wales and in monitoring their populations, partly being published in the Millennium Atlas of Butterflies (available from Head Office, see www.butterfly-conservation.org ) and our own locally published moth reports. Click on Recording for more details.

The delight of discovery; a boy holds a just-emerged 6-Spot Burnet Moth on one of our walks near Colwyn Bay.
