REVIEWS OF "A COUNTRY DIARY FOR NORTH WALES" by Jan Miller " I really did enjoy it, and se ..\publications.htm it very much in the tradition of naturalist writing that helps keep people both informed and passionate about places and wildlife. And there can be few more important things than that!" Jonathon Porritt OBE, Forum for the Future "This delightful and charismatic little book is a compilation of Butterfly Conservation North Wales Branch volunteer Jan Miller’s column in the Denbighshire Free Press, but this is more than a parochial book. Choice quotations are scattered through the text, from DH Lawrence to John Cooper Clarke, while the authors own observations range from Dutch windmills to global warming. There’s some lovely humour, too. Of hedge-laying she notes that sharp tools and unswerving confidence are the basic requirements for success, adding that the same could probably be said of most things in life. And the tale of her phone call to the Countryside Council for Wales to report a dead polecat had me laughing out loud best to let you read that one yourself. Newts and woodlice, bumblebees and badgers all amble through this entertaining and articulate book, but its the butterflies and moths that are the heroes, many illustrated by the late Alan Wagstaff, to whom the book is dedicated. All in all, whether or not you’re familiar with North Wales, this is a lovely piece of nature writing that you’ll thoroughly enjoy." Malcolm Tait, Editor, ‘Butterfly’magazine "North Wales is a large patch, and Jan Miller stretches her canvas wide by introducing current affairs, literature, local history, folklore and anything else that takes her fancy into her diary. The author’s warm and curious personality comes to the fore, as does her enthusiasm for the delights of her home territory. With its chatty style, this is an easy read. For me what marks it out is the author’s insatiable appetite for involving others in the pleasures of contact with, and working for wildlife. The diary is full of addresses and contact details, pointers to local activities and events, and other suggestions about what to look out for. There is plenty of material here to feed an interest in the natural world. Highly recommended." At last a field guide which allows the identification of all the butterflies flying in Europe with confidence. This pocket field guide (13 x 19 cm, 352 pages, 1300 colour photos, softcover) has everything to become the ideal companion of your travels and excursions. This book is basically a subdivided determination key. The beginner can follow it step by step untill he gets the name of the butterfly, the keen entomologist can directly go to the relevant genus or species. There are about 1300 colour photos of living butterflies with useful lines pointing to distinguishing features. For each species the text, photos and distribution map are presented together. The distribution maps are precised and updated, with detailed maps for local species. The author’s aim is to enable the identification of all species in the field without killing them, and there are genitalia drawings for the more difficult species with a method to check them without killing. SOME REVIEWS; " This lovely book presents a quantum leap of an advance in field guides on butterfly identification (…). The photographs are simply excellent and the accompanying keys are clear and simple, the print large and easily read in the field. (…) Almost everything in this book is innovative (…) This book is manifestly something special for butterfly recording. The proof of its value will gradually emerge over the next decade or so." Roger L. H. Dennis, ENTOMOLOGIST'S GAZETTE " (…)
excellent photographs (…) and a key to the diagnostic features of each
butterfly make this book a must for anyone interested in identifying
butterflies." David Withrington, ENGLISH NATURE
MAGAZINE " All told if you are looking for a book to get you started on the butterflies of Europe this will do the job well, and if you are familiar with the common species already and looking to extend your expertise then this book will also serve your purposes well. Highly Recommended" Gordon Ramel, www.earthlife.net |
